Making friends, learning new skills, big achievements and some challenges too – our school days are often referred to as the best days of our lives.
School days are a topic that comes up again and again when we talk to our residents about their lives. In February, we want to involve you and your residents in recalling memories about this important time of their lives – the time when they went to school. We are running a competition to find our favourite funny, personal, and meaningful stories from this time.
Opportunity for Reminiscence
Collecting this material should be fun and enjoyable, as it provides an opportunity for good conversation and sharing of memories. By listening and recording people’s memories you will also increase your knowledge and understanding of their lives and experiences.
There are many ways to gather these stories. You might sit down and have a one-to-one chat with a resident. Alternatively, you might run a reminiscence session focused on school days. Make it a relaxed and informal affair with props and objects relating to individual school experiences to stimulate the conversation. Use open questions to encourage the sharing of personal memories. With the resident’s permission, record these memories and enter our competition. Don’t forget to also add any of this new information to their life histories which you keep in the care home.
We will choose four winners, and each winning activity coordinator will receive a cheque for £75. In addition, the winning entries will be reproduced as columns in the Daily Sparkle, attributed to the resident.
To enter the competition, write your resident’s story in approximately 100 words on the special entry form at www.dailysparkle.co.uk/competition. All entries must be received in this way to be included in the competition. You will also need your care home reference number – a four or five digit number found in the subject line of the email which has your Daily or Weekly Sparkles attached. All entries must be received by 1 March 2019 and the winners will be notified by 15 April 2019.
