1st March: St David’s Day

You can’t celebrate St David’s Day without daffodils, so be sure to display some in your care home. Make sure you have Welsh cakes on the afternoon tea trolley today – they are delicious served warm with lashings of butter!

3rd March: World Book Day

Today is a great day to hold a discussion session – ask your residents to talk about their favourite books, or put out a selection of childhood books that may prompt memories. Could you arrange a visit to the local library or a visit from the local librarian? Most primary schools and nurseries acknowledge World Book Day by asking children to dress up as a well-known fictional character. Perhaps they could visit the care home to show off their costumes.

10th-13th March: Crufts Dog Show

The perfect opportunity to arrange a visit from some furry friends! Ask around to see if any staff members, volunteers or residents’ relatives have a dog that would be suitable to bring in for a visit. If not, there are many charities that would be delighted to. You could even host your own dog show – with a prize for the waggiest tail!

16th-17th March: Purim Jewish Festival

Make sure you acknowledge this important religious festival if any of your residents are Jewish. Even if you don’t have any Jewish residents in your home, today offers the chance to teach them about the history behind Purim. There are many Purim-themed resources available online, as well as recipes to make delicious hamantaschen to eat whilst celebrating!

17th March: St Patrick’s Day

Make potatoes a key theme of today. Use large potatoes to make stamps and encourage residents to create a piece of artwork to display in a communal area. Ask your kitchen team to serve a variety of potatoes today – you could even set up a voting poll to discover your residents’ favourite form of potato! Will mash, chips or jackets win?!

18th March: Red Nose Day

Today is a great day to hold some fundraising activities. Comic Relief offers a free fundraising pack via their website – click here to register for yours. Fundraising for charities outside of the care home is a brilliant way to show community spirit and generosity. It is also very rewarding for your residents to feel as though they have contributed to a worthy cause that benefits others.

18th March: Holi Hindu Festival

If you have any Hindu residents in your home, involve them in discussing ways to celebrate today. Alternatively, you could invite a priest from your local Hindu temple to visit your care home and discuss Holi with your residents. Holi is commonly referred to as the ‘festival of colour’, so it’s a good day to get colourful and crafty!

21st March: World Poetry Day

Poetry is a main theme within our March resources. We’ve included various activity ideas and session plans in our Magazine and Activity Bank. If you don’t already subscribe, why not take out a free trial to access these activities and many more?

27th March: Mothering Sunday

Host an afternoon tea party to celebrate mothers everywhere. Our AC Mentor Jan Millward suggests some wonderful ways to include all residents – not just those that are mothers – in today’s activity plan. Read more here.

The clocks also go forward this weekend, so make the most of the extra daylight by making some tasty treats with your residents. No-bake options such as chocolate crispy cakes or rocky road are an easy option and always go down well!
