June Wall Planner Activities

We hope you have all been enjoying the early summer weather so far! June is a busy month with plenty of exciting activities to celebrate and engage in.

June celebratesPride Month. Did you know that the first Pride march happened in 1972 in London?Since then, Pride marches andevents have taken place across the country. It is agreat opportunity to discuss sexuality and changing attitudes in society since the end of the Second World War.

Trooping the Colour also takes place in June, and you can watch all the pomp and pageantry on television, while waving your flags, and spotting the royals in attendance!

Don’t forget to tune into Royal Ascot, and Wimbledon at the end of the month for some sporting action, and you can check out even more highlights for June below!

Pride Month (1st – 30th Jun)
June is Pride Month. Nowadays, Pride marches and events take place throughout the country, celebrating the LGBTQ+ community and recognising the contributions of this community within our society. It is an opportunity to discuss sexuality and changing attitudes in society that your residents will have witnessed.

Queen Elizabeth II Coronation (2nd June 1953)
Queen Elizabeth II was born on 21st April 1926. She ascended to the throne when she was just 25 years old and was the longest reigning monarch, serving Britain as the Queen for over 70 years. The Queen passed away on 8th September 2022 at her Scottish residence, Balmoral Castle. Her death was felt across the world, and the British public mourned her passing and celebrated her wonderful life. A great topic for reminiscence.

Eid ul-Adha(6th – 10th June)
Eid ul-Adha is the Festival of Sacrifice, and is one of the most important festivals in the Muslim calendar.Celebrations for Eid ul-Adha include prayers at the Mosque, social gatherings with family and friends, feasts, and sharing of meat dishes with friends and those less fortunate. It is celebrated each year at the end of the Hajj pilgrimage. A great opportunity to take part in this festival and educate residents on the story of Ibrahim.

Portugal Day (10th June)
Portugal is one of the oldest countries in Europe. It is steeped in a rich history of discovery, and art and culture feature prominently throughout this beautiful land. Visitors can enjoy stunning landscapes, miles of amazing coastline and vibrant cities with intricate historical architecture. Learn some Portuguese phrases, print off Portuguese flags, watch a YouTube travel video, and prepare some Portuguese snacks to celebrate!

Trooping the Colour (14th Jun)
Every year in June, the Trooping the Colour ceremony takes place on Horse Guards Parade, London. It is known as the Kings Birthday Parade. King Charles III rides on horseback from Buckingham Palace, along the Mall to Horse Guards Parade with other members of the royal family following in a procession. The pageantry will be shown on BBC One, find out how to watch it here

Royal Ascot (17th – 21st Jun)
Look out your fancy hats and Sunday finest to prepare for Royal Ascot! A great few days of racing, but also a lovely excuse to get dressed up, enjoy a hat decorating competition and arrange an afternoon tea with a glass of fizz! Find out how you can watch all the action from Royal Ascot here

Summer Solstice (21st Jun)
Take advantage of the lovely summer weather and organise some outdoor activities. You could arrange a summer fte with cake stalls, raffle prizes and refreshments, and invite family and friends to join you. You can also engage in some lovely floral activities like flower pressing or flower arranging.
