Making A Memory Box

Activity Coordinator Top Tips!

Have you made use of memory boxes yet?

A great tool for holding reminiscence groups – if you don’t have the time or resources to make your own, you can hire memory boxes containing old items, maps, clothes, photographs and newspaper clippings from the past 60 years or so. Local libraries also often hold local history events, and you could even get them to visit the care home to hold these sessions.

If you want to make your own, then follow these simple steps from Sunrise Care, which includes making sure to get residents involved in decorating the boxes and deciding what to put in them.

It’s important to make this as sensory as possible – so include things that are interesting because of the way they feel, smell, taste, sound or look. Some of our favourite things to include are:

  • Old photos
  • Old spectacles
  • Books
  • Beer mats
  • Vintage fabric
  • Pens and pencils
  • Old notebooks
  • Vintage toys
  • Keychains
  • Recipes
  • Dried flowers
  • Family photos
  • Holiday postcards
  • Vintage sweets
  • Perfume
