‘Reader’s Corner’ – Femi falls in love

October is Black History Month here in the UK. This is a time to celebrate the contribution Black people have made over the centuries, and how they have shaped the dynamic and diverse country we have today. Today we are sharing Femi’s tale of falling in love.

Dear Daily Sparkle,

My parents were always hosting relatives and friends. Our home was often very cramped!

I left my childhood home in Jamaica quite early on. I longed to see the world and explore other countries. First, I moved to Geneva, which is where I fell in love with Elias. Being Black, I was seen as exotic, so I had many admirers! But it was Elias that I loved and he loved me too. We had three sons together and we built our lives in London, where we still live. We are old and grey now, but how lucky we are to be old and grey together.

We dealt with a lot of prejudice in our lives. Many people thought that Black and White people should not be together, and some still do. I still wonder why.

The truth is, there is no way of forcing love’s hand. It will always do as it pleases. That is love.

Best wishes, Femi
