‘Reader’s Corner’ – Connecting with residents and making memories

Shashank Gupta shares his experience of working in a care home, connecting with residents, and a valuable idea that came from this.

Dear Daily Sparkle,

In my time working at a care home, I had the privilege of meeting Gerry, a 92-year-old resident who quickly became a part of my daily routine. Every morning, without fail, Gerry would make his way to the reception desk, where hed sit with me for hours, chatting about life, memories, and everything in between.

Gerry had a cheeky habit of calling me George, no matter how often everyone reminded him my name was not George. Eventually, we stopped correcting himit became our little inside joke. I came to cherish those moments with him. Through our conversations, I learned about his days as a talent manager, his love for Cat Stevens, and his deep devotion to his late wife. In return, I shared stories from my own life, and somewhere along the way, Gerry became more than a resident to mehe became a friend.

Sadly, Gerry passed away recently. The care home feels a little quieter without his laughter echoing through the hallways or his warm presence by the reception desk. I miss him deeply, but his memory stays with me, a reminder of the profound connections we can form when we take the time to listen, share, and simply be present.

This memory of Gerry inspired an idea. What if more people had the opportunity to build these kinds of relationships? Thats why my partner and I started The Kefi Studio where you can book DBS verified volunteers for care homes, where care homes can book an hour for free to visit a care home, engage with residents, and discover the joy of meaningful connections.

An hour may seem small, but it can brighten a residents day and leave a lasting imprint on your heartjust like Gerry did on mine. Sometimes, its the simple act of being there that creates the most beautiful memories.

Lets create more moments like these, one hour at a time.
