‘Reader’s Corner’ – when Hilda met the Queen

Our subscribers have been sharing their memories of Her Majesty The Queen Elizabeth II. Here, one of our readers, Hilda, tells us about the time she met the Queen.

“I don’t have a very good memory but I will always remember this day. It was a summer’s day in 1967. The Queen and Prince Philip both visited a school in Rutland, near to where I lived at the time with my husband and our young daughters. It was such an exciting day. The national anthem was played by the school’s orchestra and we all sang along loudly.

My youngest daughter Pauline held out her teddy bear when the Queen walked past, as she could see other little girls handing over gifts. Luckily Pauline’s teddy bear wasn’t taken, as I think she would have missed it! The Queen was a wonderful woman. I will always carry fond memories of her time serving our country.
