‘Reader’s Corner’ – A mother’s advice

October is Black History Month here in the UK. This is a time to celebrate the contribution Black people have made over the centuries, and how they have shaped the dynamic and diverse country we have today. Today we are sharing Alicia’s story.

Dear Daily Sparkle,

My mother would always say: Sit straight, knees together, hands on your lap. God is always watching.’ I grew up in Barbados, surrounded by God-fearing women who put a lot of stock in deportment. Women had to do the right thing, say the right thing, look a certain way but not so much the men! I came to Britain to study in the 1960s. It was the making of me. I became a secretary. It was an incredible feeling to earn my own money and save up enough to buy my own house. I had the freedom to socialise here too. The parties I had! They would go on for days… but I never told Mama!

Best wishes, Alicia
