‘Reader’s Corner’ – Hibo and the Spider Spirit

October is Black History Month here in the UK. This is a time to celebrate the contribution Black people have made over the centuries, and how they have shaped the dynamic and diverse country we have today. Today we are sharing Hibo’s memories.

Dear Daily Sparkle,

My father was a master weaver of Kente cloth, a Ghanaian textile. I loved watching him work his magic on the loom. He could transform strips of silk and cotton thread into blocks of beautiful colour and pattern. It was like magic.

I told my father I wanted to be a master weaver like him when I grew up. For many years he told me I had to ‘seek out the spider spirit’ if I wanted to learn the secret of Kente. He always said it with a big smile on his face. I never understand what to do. I simply read about Anansi. Luckily when my father decided I was old enough to use his loom safely, he finally agreed to teach me himself!

Best wishes,

Hibo
